Do you get your military ID before basic?

To obtain a military ID card, you must register in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS). Your initial entry into the system may occur at basic training or on your first assignment. You must fill out an official form and provide personal data to receive your ID card.

Who gets a CAC card?

The CAC, a “smart” card about the size of a credit card, is the standard identification for active duty uniformed Service personnel, Selected Reserve, DoD civilian employees, and eligible contractor personnel.

How long do you have to be in the military to be considered a veteran?

To be considered a veteran, any military personnel must be on active-duty service for at least 180 days. The only exception is if the member sustained a service-related injury and was discharged under honorable conditions.

Do I get my uniform at MEPS?

Yes the unit you are assigned to should provide a uniform. Depends on the status of your enlistment and if you are in the National Guard. You will not receive use the same uniform as a soldier who’s been to basic but an altered uniform typically consisting of a t- shirt and jeans.

Do you have to pay for your uniforms in basic training?

Yes, but not for everything they need at boot camp. Recruits receive an initial uniform allowance of $1,157.21 for men and $1,371.69 for women. The sailor never sees the money, it goes directly to pay for the uniforms and is recorded as a credit and debt on the pay record.
