Can I add spacers to my headset?

The first and easiest way to adjust handlebar height is by moving headset spacers. Headset spacers sit on the fork’s steerer tube and help pre-load the headset bearings during adjustment. Generally, most bikes have 20 to 30mm of headset spacers that can be moved freely above or below the stem.

Do I need a spacer below my stem?

There is no reason to have any problem due to no spacers under the stem. I rode two different bikes that way over four seasons. You see pictures of pro bikes setup that way all the time. It is wise, but not absolutely necessary to have a 2.5-5mm spacer on top of the stem.

Do all forks need a crown race?

The crown race is the only thing that separates the headtube and fork. Without it, the headtube (of the frame) and fork will sit flush against each other. With no gap between the two surfaces, they will grind against each other, causing damage to both the forks and headtube.

How tight should stem cap be?

When tightening the headset top cap it MUST push down on the stem, or the spacer above it, and not the fork column itself (the top cap pushes down on the headset which tightens it up). Do up the headset top cap until it is just tight — at this point you should be unable to turn your stem spacers. Do not overtighten it.
