Why is Little Round Top closing?
Little Round Top Rehabilitation Project This project is estimated to begin no sooner than July 5 and will take approximately 18 months to complete. During this time, Little Round Top will be CLOSED. Overwhelmed parking areas, poor accessibility, safety hazards, and erosion will be addressed.

What was so important about Little Round Top?
The geographic importance of Little Round Top is obvious: whoever controlled that ground could dominate the countryside to the west for miles. And, with most of the Union Army arranged to the north of the hill, the hill represented the extreme left flank of the Union lines. Losing that position would be disastrous.

This battle was significant because it prevented the Confederates from taking control of Cemetery Hill, which would have given them a strategic advantage in the war. Over time, Little Round Top has become an important historical landmark because of its role in the Battle for Gettysburg.
