What media is used in soda blasting?

What media is used in soda blasting?

Soda blasting gets its name from the type of blast media that it uses: sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). The abrasive media used for soda blasting is not the baking soda that you buy in the grocery store. Companies such as Armex and Natrium manufacture varieties of sodium bicarbonate specifically for soda blasting.

How much does soda blast cost?

Soda Blasting Cost Soda blasting costs around $1.50 to $2.50 per pound and is one of the oldest blasting methods.

Can you soda blast with regular baking soda?

Can I use regular baking soda like I see in the grocery store? No. While all baking soda is chemically the same (NAHCO3) only ARMEX is formulated for use as a blast media and only ARMEX is manufactured by ARM & HAMMER™.

Is soda blasting media the same as baking soda?

The sodium bicarbonate used in soda blasting isn’t the same “baking soda” used in food, though. Manufacturing companies produce sodium bicarbonate specifically for soda blasting applications.

Can I use sand in a soda blaster?

Yes you Can Soda Blast in a Regular Sandblaster.

What do I need for soda blasting?

The equipment necessary for soda blasting includes an air supply with adequate cubic foot per minute (CFM) specifications for nozzle size, hose length and desired blast pressure; an after-cooler (depending on air quality); a moisture separator; a blast pot, hose and nozzle; and, of course, ARMEX blast media.

Is soda blasting expensive?

Soda blasting uses expensive material and therefore is the most costly method of the three.

Can I soda blast with my sandblaster?

Yes you Can Soda Blast in a Regular Sandblaster The good news is that you can use baking soda in a regular sandblast pot. While it is possible it is not an ideal situation for two primary reasons. First, soda blast pots have a device to keep the soda media from sticking together by gently agitating the soda media.

How long does soda blast media last?

bag of media last during blasting? Recycled Glass will last a minimum of 30 – 60 minutes (based off of abrasive dose setting and blast pressure setting.) Other abrasive types may vary.

Why sand blasting is forbidden now?

Because of the high risk for silicosis in sandblasters and the difficulty in controlling the hazards, NIOSH has recommended that silica be banned for this use and that less hazardous materials be used in blasting operations.

Can you use walnut shell in a soda blaster?

Because walnut shell blasting media is derived from walnuts, it is a natural product that is non-toxic and biodegradable. Walnut media does not produce dust, so it is safe for indoor use as well. Also, it has been found not to cause Silicosis, which can occur from using sand or silica products.

How big of an air compressor do I need for soda blasting?

An air compressor which produces between 10CFM – 20 CFM is ideal for smaller sandblasting tasks. While a compressor which produces between 18CFM to 35 CFM is better for larger jobs where a more powerful experience is needed. While an industrial type of sandblasting needs a CFM of 50 – 100.

What CFM is required for soda blasting?

Soda or “conventional” sandblasting – it doesn’t make much difference – they both need a lot of CFM at 90 psi for continuous blasting. Something like 10+ cfm at 90psi. Not really provided by small “homeowner” type compressors.

What grit is soda blasting?

It is a specially formulated sodium bicarbonate abrasive. PARTICLE SIZE: 3 different particle sizes available, small, media and large. Largest particles are found in ARMEX formulas that have “XL” in the name. These particles have a mean size of 270 microns or 70 grit.

Will soda blasting damage glass?

Baking Soda Blasting will not harm glass, rubber, chromed metal or polished stainless steel. It can dull the finish on polished aluminum automotive trim and should not be used unless it is protected or a dull finish is acceptable.

Can I reuse sandblasting sand?

Sand cannot be reused after sandblasting, but it can be recycled into other materials, such as cement, while harder materials such as garnet, steel shot, and glass beads can be screened and separated to recycle.

Does soda blasting damage Chrome?

Baking Soda Blasting does not produce heat like abrasive blasting; therefore it cannot heat up and distort sheet metal. It will not harm Glass, Chrome or Rubber products. It effectively removes paint, body filler, undercoating, seam sealer and etc.

What is the best blast media for rust removal?

If you are blasting aluminum, plastic media, walnut shell, or glass beads are the best choices. These have a lower Mohs hardness, so the metal surface isn’t devastated. For steel or iron, glass beads or aluminum oxide is a good choice, especially if you want to take it down to bare metal.

How much psi do you need for sandblasting?

You should use a tank with a minimum of 100 PSI for optimum efficiency with any abrasive sandblasting project. If you work with a lower PSI, you’ll add a significant amount of time to your project.
