What is the SecondBite program?

What is the SecondBite program?

We rescue edible surplus food from growers, manufacturers and retailers and distribute it free of charge to over 1,400 charities and not-for-profit organisations to feed vulnerable Aussies in need. Our partners use the rescued food for nourishing meals, emergency relief packages, community pantries and much more.

Who does SecondBite help?

SecondBite, City of Sydney and Coles have banded together to provide vital food relief to vulnerable Sydney residents by donating and delivering the equivalent of 158,750 meals to individuals and families impacted by COVID-19.

How do you volunteer for SecondBite?

Participants must be aged 18 years or above. To register your interest or for more information please either complete the form below, email us at [email protected] or call 1800 263 283. We also have other volunteering opportunities such as: Collecting surplus food from local markets.

Is SecondBite local or global?

SecondBite works in every state and territory in Australia.

How did SecondBite start?

Co-founders of SecondBite, ​Simone and Ian Carson established SecondBite after watching too much good food go to waste while too many people went hungry. They first started SecondBite in 2005, with just three volunteers in Victoria and moved just over 600 kg of food a year.

OzHarvest Volunteer Van Assistants help our drivers in the physical collection of rescued food from donors; loading food into our yellow vans following approved food safety guidelines, and distributing it to our recipient agencies.

Who We Are. Founded by Ronni Kahn AO in 2004 after noticing the huge volume of food going to waste, OzHarvest quickly grew to become Australia’s leading food rescue organisation. Food is at our core, saving surplus food from ending up in landfill and delivering it to charities that help feed people in need.

When was SecondBite created?

Simone Carson and husband Ian co-founded SecondBite in 2005. With a group of friends, they would visit market stalls, collect surplus food and drop it to a local charity. A partnership with Coles six years later led to a rapid expansion.
