There are concerns about the long-term safety of bisphosphonates (such as Reclast) as long-term use has been associated with atypical femur fractures, osteonecrosis of the jaw, and esophageal cancer. The risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw is greater in those who have received chemotherapy, radiation, or steroids.

How is an osteoporosis infusion done?

Zoledronic acid (Reclast) is an intravenous (IV) infusion given through your veins by a healthcare provider over at least 15 minutes. Treatment of osteoporosis: The typical dose is 5 mg given IV once every year.

How long does an infusion take for osteoporosis?

The infusion time must not be less than 15 minutes and the infusion rate should be constant. On the day of the infusion, patients may eat and drink normally. It is recommended that they drink at least 2 glasses of water (500 mL), before and after the infusion of zoledronic acid.
