Is there a road on Assateague Island?
Assateague’s north entrance is at the end of Route 611, eight miles south of Ocean City, MD. The south entrance is at the end of Route 175, two miles east of Chincoteague, VA. There is no vehicle access between the two entrances on Assateague Island.
Can you drive the entire length of Assateague Island?
Note: Cars can’t drive the length of Assateague Island; they must head back to the mainland to reach the other end. Which isn’t a bad thing; the mainland of Maryland and Virginia is full of fun activities!
Why is Assateague OSV closed?
The beach has been very badly scoured and has narrowed significantly in places, with many large scarps that make it dangerous. We’re told it is totally impassable in at least one place, and a large percentage of the OSV boundary markers have been lost and/or destroyed. The OSV will be closed until further notice.
