If you’re noticing that a clogged or stuffy sound is coming from your instrument, don’t worry- it’s a common problem that’s usually related to the trumpet’s valves. To find and eliminate the problem check the valves to ensure none of the corks, felts, or spacers are worn down.

How do you free a stuck trumpet valve?

Again, get oil where you can and apply enough heat that it is just uncomfortable to hold. With a hyde, wood or plastic mallet, tap the top of the valve stem gently until the piston just starts to move. Install the valve button again and pull. If it won’t move, apply a little more heat and tap just a little harder.

How do I fix the airy sound on my trumpet?

The best way to get rid of an airy sound is to play long tones very quietly. If your embouchure isn’t right (e.g., lips too far apart), your lips won’t buzz at all, and you’ll move them around until it works better. You can start playing at a normal volume and then get as soft as you can, then hold a long tone.

Why does my trumpet sound dry?
