How do you clean Springbok skins?

You may also use a damp (not wet) cloth which you’ve soaked in a residue of soft soap and water and rub in the direction of the hairs. Make sure you do not make the hide entirely wet! Don’t put it into your washing machine or bring it to a dry cleaner!

Can you wash an animal skin?

For spot cleaning, simply dampen a sponge or cloth (damp, not wet!) and gently rub the affected area. If water doesnt seem to be enough, you can use a mild soap or shampoo (baby shampoo has the fewest chemicals!) and again, gently rub the area, going in the direction of the hair as much as possible.

What does alum do to a hide?

Alum tanning makes the leather white and very water-sensitive. The tannins are washable, making this leather much more sensitive than with chrome tanning which, with a few exceptions such as for Sheepskin, has replaced alum tanning.
