The atrial natriuretic hormone (ANP) is a cardiac hormone which gene and receptors are widely present in the body. Its main function is to lower blood pressure and to control electrolyte homeostasis.

Article. ATRIAL NATRIURETIC HORMONE (ANH) inhibits the release of CRH in vitro (1, 2) and possibly in vivo (3). ANH inhibits basal and ACTH release in vitro (4–6). ANH also inhibits CRH-stimulated ACTH release in humans (7) and unstimulated ACTH levels in rats (8).

Atrial naturetic hormone or ANP is a member of a family of peptides that have important roles in regulating blood pressure, most prominently through their activity in the kidney to promote excretion of water and sodium. A majority of ANP is synthesized and secreted from cardiac muscle cells, particularly in the atria.

What causes the release of Anh?

A decrease in blood volume or low blood pressure, which occurs during dehydration or a haemorrhage, is detected by sensors (baroreceptors) in the heart and large blood vessels. These stimulate anti-diuretic hormone release.

What is ANP and BNP?

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) are secreted from the cardiac atria and ventricles, respectively. ANP signals in an endocrine and paracrine manner to decrease blood pressure and cardiac hypertrophy. BNP acts locally to reduce ventricular fibrosis.

What causes natriuresis?

The shift of pressure natriuresis can be caused by intrarenal disturbances that increase tubular reabsorption or reduce renal blood flow and GFR in some cases.

Does angiotensin II increase blood pressure?

Angiotensin II is the main effector molecule of the RAS. It causes increases in blood pressure, influences renal tubuli to retain sodium and water, and stimulates aldosterone release from adrenal gland.

What effect does Anh have on aldosterone?

Low-dose ANH infusion caused a marked increase in urine flow and urinary sodium excretion and prominent suppression of PRA and plasma aldosterone in sodium-depleted subjects. These results suggest a physiological significance of ANH in regulation of kidney function and aldosterone secretion.
